ANC Singapore carries the name of Carabiniere Scelto Vittorio Iacovacci, Gold Medal for Military Valour. This is who he was, and why we remember him.
Who he was
Vittorio Iacovacci was born in 1990 and came from Sonnino, in the province of Latina. A Carabiniere, he was assigned to protect the Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luca Attanasio.
22 February 2021
On 22 February 2021, near Goma, the convoy carrying Ambassador Attanasio on a humanitarian mission was attacked. Vittorio Iacovacci protected the Ambassador until the very end. He was 30. Ambassador Attanasio and their driver, Mustapha Milambo, also lost their lives.
The Gold Medal for Military Valour
The President of the Italian Republic awarded him the Gold Medal for Military Valour, the highest Italian military decoration, in memory. The citation recognises the courage with which he protected the Ambassador.
Why the section carries his name
ANC Singapore was inaugurated in February 2026, around the fifth anniversary of his death, and chose to be dedicated to him. His name is embroidered on the section's banner and written on the section's plaque, unveiled at the Embassy of Italy in Singapore.
How we remember him
Every 22 February, the section remembers Vittorio Iacovacci, Ambassador Luca Attanasio and Mustapha Milambo. It is a quiet date in our calendar: a moment to honour a young man who gave his life protecting others, far from home.
